When Dani discusses her love of cultivating plants she begins to glow. Just as the Flower of Life is made out of overlapping circles, life on the Island is ruled by cycles. The growing season, the tourist season, the cycle of one’s own life are all woven together. A Southwest Harbor native Dani’s talent is both bringing things from the earth and showing others that it’s not as hard as they might think.
Elissa’s humor is infectious. She is good at using it to relate to those around her and put others at ease. “Life is long. Let’s enjoy it.” I couldn’t agree more. Her humor makes the things she touches beautiful.
Maps illustrate space. They also graph data. Hope is good at building data maps that reveal the unseeable. From migrations to behaviors, her maps tell the story of not only where we are going but why we go there.
Originally from Nebraska, Jen found her talent for performing at a young age. She came up at IO in Chicago and brought improv to the Island over ten years ago. She is fearless on stage and off—carving out a place for intuitive and hilarious performances for the community. Her tool belt for improv has served her in every realm she enters.
Jennifer Booher has a talent for seeing things and framing them for our visual consumption in a manner that is quite enviable. She walks the shores of Mount Desert Island, combing and collecting things that wash ashore and documenting them in her project, The Coast Walk. From tiny tide pools to dark caves, she looks and finds things not everyone can see.
Jena is good at working with people to build teams. She runs Side Street Cafe in Bar Harbor which is privy to the extreme cycle of insanely busy summers and very quiet winters. Ramping up each year is a huge feat that requires all hands on deck and a solid leader to bring people together and unite in a common goal. During the time of this interview, Jena is expecting a child who is already learning the ropes in utero.
Judie has a talent for making women feel comfortable in their own bodies. She
knows when to listen and when to provide the right words of encouragement and advice. She is slowly building a small army of women in comfortable bras from her little store called Bra Harbor.
Nicole is good at writing. Whether professionally or personally, it is an activity that not only communicates ideas but helps her to reflect on her own process. It is the tie that binds her to both her community and her inner strength.
Nina balances many different forces in her sphere from family to three small businesses. She brings order to the world and finds familiar comfort in creating beautiful donuts for her loved ones to enjoy. The recipe comes from her grandmother who enlisted her to help bake as a child.
Kristy is good at helping others realize their inner strength. Working with everyone from the young to the elderly, she helps people at their own pace to realize that balance and physical wellbeing is within their reach.
